• Agromin Is Winner of Climate Change Award from Ventura County Board of Supervisors - Thursday, April 23, 2009 at

  • Agromin was one of a handful of companies honored by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors on April 21 in honor of Earth Day. Agromin was the co-winner, along with Limoneira Company, of the first annual Countrywide Climate Change Award in the Agricultural Industry category.

A selection committee decided on the top nominees in each category. Agromin was singled out for its green waste recycling partnership with Limoneira Company, one of California's largest avocado and lemon growers. Awards were presented by Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long to Nan Drake, Agromin public affairs director, and Harold Edwards, president and CEO of Limoneira Company.

In 2004 The Limoneira Co. created a partnership with Agromin to develop a 10-acre green materials recycling facility on Limoneira’s land to receive green waste from throughout Ventura County and convert it to mulch that is then spread onto Limoneira orchards. The mulch curbs erosion, improves water efficiency, reduces weeds, and moderates soil temperatures. About 200 tons of raw green waste is received daily at the operation where the yard waste, tree limbs and urban wood waste (mainly from construction sites) is cleaned, ground and converted into 120 tons of finished material.

Water usage is down by 32 percent at Limoneira because of its use of Agromin mulch.
