It all starts with you--and what you place in your green recycling container. Grass clippings, fresh garden trimmings, shrubs, cut flowers, house plants, recyclable flower containers, weeds and coffee grounds are high in nitrogen and all should find their way into your green materials barrel. Dry leaves, small branches, straw, twigs, sawdust and wood chips are high in carbon and are also perfect to recycle.
Everything else needs to stay out including plastic and glass bottles, diapers, rocks, dirt, animal waste, tennis balls, plastic flowerpots, vegetables, plastic bags from soil products, charcoal ash, metals and paper.
Note: A family of four produces about 2.2 tons of green waste a year.
